bag half-full

Within an hour of writing the past entry I started to feel a bit better. There is something about just getting it out there. And, being heard. I truly appreciate everyone who takes time to read my words, and to respond. Heartfully.

Today started sunny and bright. I am having a quiet day, recuperating from the extensive holiday-gathering.

This is one of the benefits of under-employment. It is Monday, and I am home. I've read a lot, did the tiniest bit of job-hunting, some laundry. And, I just took a long long walk.

It started out to be my normal 20-30 minute loop, but within a minute of entering the park(we live near a river) I saw empty plastic bags caught on low bushes. I got annoyed, and went to grab them, and they were so empty(and clean) that I decided I might as well pick up trash, and fill one, while walking.

I HATE litter. I think we need a new "give a hoot don't pollute" campaign in this country. I filled the bag, and tossed it at the (scarce)bins near some basketball courts, and realized that my walk had been pretty slow, what with the bending and collecting of bottles, cans, wrappers.

So, I decided to walk further(but no more trash-picking) and ended up going another 30 minutes. It felt good, to push myself, past a small hunger, and past my comfy exercise zone. On the way back, I saw a kingfisher, tweetering away.

It feels like new years day, today. A bit solitary and quiet. Time to start new, fresh. Bring on the luck!

  1. You have been heard and your hope was felt.

May you find a way to bottle up this positive energy. And may this new year bring all the luck you need.

  2. I hate litter also and to leave trash is akin to being the source of it, so thank you. Beautiful picture, and Sending the luck!

  6. I just consulted my book "animal speak" about totem animals. The shamans believe that animals bring us messages, and look what it says:
"The Kingfisher is a long-time symbol of peace and prosperity (...) the promise of abundance - of new warmth and love about to unfold within your life. Because it relates to the Greek legend of Hacyone, it can reflect that as we bring out a self-sacrificing love and manifest it, it will bring new life to us and those closest to us.
If a kingfisher has come to you, prepare yourself to dive into something new. Have you been afraid to take the plunge? Are you needing new warmth? Don't worry. If a kingfisher is around, you won't drown. In fact, you will find that, as a result, you will have new sunshine and prosperity unfolding in your life."

  7. I loved reading about your walk. I am a litter freak, too. I have been known to grab and bag and pick up random junk. About 4 years ago I did a pretty major cleanup (multiple LARGE garbage packs) of a brushy area near my then-apartment. I felt pretty self-conscious with the passing cars. I think I wore a sweatshirt and put the hood up, hoping that no one I knew would see me doing it. I don't know why it felt weird, but it kinda did. I'm glad there are people like us out there, and I wish there were more.

    Lovely kingfisher photo.

I am absolutely wishing you the best luck for 2009.

  8. Hi Poppy,
I'm visiting your blog for the first time, and really enjoying it. Your writing and poetry is beautiful!

My husband has azoospermia (MFI) and we're getting ready for a IVF/ICSI cycle in the spring. He's a high school teacher, so I relate to so many of your stories, and especially the stress over lack of funds and spending money in a bad economy.

I'll be reading along and hoping that all of your dreams come true in 2009!
